What Makes a Scene Iconic

Whether its “I’m the king of the world!”, “Jack, I’m flying”, “On Wednesdays we wear pink”, or, of course, the ever classic “Whoever said orange is the new pink was seriously disturbed”, we’ve all heard these lines, and we use these lines in our daily lives. But how can one tell if a movie will be iconic, and how is one to measure if one movie is more iconic than the next? “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” was extremely popular, but was it iconic? It didn’t nearly match the revenue that “Titanic” had collected, but still, “Titanic” was created in a time before the internet, so “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” was much more widely shared at the time of its release than Titanic. The era in which a movie is released has no effect on whether a movie is iconic, it simply affects how popular it is at the time. There is a great difference between popular. and iconic; while both imply people love the movies, popularity is dependent on time, and as time goes on, the popularity fades. Popularity is a state, which will come and go in waves, but will never be everlasting. Iconic, implies a much deeper meaning. Iconic describes a masterpiece in which people have been devoted to, an art that transcends time, era, and every other measure that determines popularity. Iconic means it will stay iconic- it will never be let go by movie-goers. No matter how many times we might have seen “Titanic”, it still makes our hearts ache to see a blossoming romance so tragically ended, and “Mean Girls” continues to push the boundaries of the self-created social construct, and the “Jingle Bell Rock” dance never gets old. Thus, there is only one thing it means to be iconic- it is a symbol for anything in the world, but it is so worthy of appreciation, it’s idolized, and this idolization plants a solid base for a future, that will stand firmly and unchanged, especially as all things around it morph, wither, fade, and destruct.

For my interactive oral, I plan to recreate iconic movie scenes in class.
